Our Borzoi
The Borzoi, or Russian Wolfhound, is a breed commonly associated with nobility. Borzois were the love of the Grand Duke Nicholas in the 18th Century. The Duke was fond of wolf-hunting and was keenly interested in breeding a dog that would be ideally suited for hunting wolves in the countryside. At this time, only nobility bred the Borzoi, and the only way to own one was if one was given as a gift. They were never bought or sold. It is not uncommon to see the Borzoi in artwork from the 1600s to 1800s, pictured with hunting gentlemen or noble ladies.
The Borzoi was originally bred for the coursing of a variety of wild game on mostly open terrain. He is a sighthound, using his sight to track his quarry. His use of scent is secondary. To be able to catch his game in this environment, he was bred for speed, agility, and strength. He was hunted in groups, so the breed needed to be able to work as a team as well. Special emphasis is placed on sound running gear, strong neck and jaws, courage and agility. The Borzoi possesses a unique elegance, unlike any other breed.
